“She was to find love in an R.A.F. camp near Weston-super-Mare.”

Created by Bob 5 years ago

So what was a young woman from Wood Green doing at an R.A.F. camp near  Weston-super-Mare?

Ivy had taken on the challenge of helping with the war effort.  After working as a Land Girl in the Home Counties – a job of which she was not particularly enamoured – she was posted to the NAAFI at R.A.F. Locking in Somerset.

Her ‘love’ was a technical instructor specialising in airframes and aero engines.

Cpl Marshall was skilled in the servicing of a range of aircraft including Spitfires, Hurricanes, Lancasters and Sunderlands.

Ivy and Joe were married at Locking Church on 23rd October, 1943.

It was not until 2008, in her 88th year, that Ivy's Land Army contribution was finally recognised by Prime Minister Gordon Brown.
